St. Nicholas Day

Later this week, December 6th, is St. Nicholas Day (Nikolaustag). On the night of the 5th (Nikolausabend), everyone leaves out a shoe. If you were good this year, Saint Nicholas will visit and leave goodies in your shoes. If you were bad, he will leave potatoes and twigs.

The text and melody for this song come from the German Rhineland. It is about Saint Nicholas who brings little gifts to children in Southern Germany on the eve of Saint Nicholas Day on December 6th. Children put out a plate, or boots, for St. Nicholas.
